Every year, controversy mounts over some Oscar selection. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a concerted effort to expand the membership over the past few years, in hopes of addressing some of these concerns. But many Oscar watchers are still unclear about who the Oscar voters are and how the coveted little gold men are handed out.
Who votes on the Oscars? As of Dec. Each person belongs to one of 17 branches. Each branch nominates for its own category — e. Everyone gets to nominate best picture. For the final voting of the winner, all branches vote for everything. Each of these has at least one Oscar category. Basically, anyone can apply, if they have feature film credits. Starting with films for , the Academy doubled the number of best picture contenders to 10, hoping for more varied fare.
Some members complained that 10 nominees would dilute the prestige of a best picture nomination, so two years later, AMPAS decided to make it flexible, for five to 10 nominations. Everyone gets a ballot and ranks their top choices for best picture. The Academy has announced that next year, for the films of , the best picture race will return to 10 nominations, eliminating the unpredictability of the number. Ben Affleck, for example, can only be an Academy member as an actor and not as a director, and Brad Pitt can only belong to the Academy as an actor and not a producer. Members vote on potential nominees for standard awards that are given to individuals or collective groups in up to 25 categories, yet members from each field may only vote to determine the nominees in their respective field.
Directors only vote for Best Director nominees, editors only vote for Best Editing nominees, cinematographers only vote for Best Cinematography nominees, and actors only vote for nominees in each acting category. Yet all voting members are eligible to vote for potential Best Picture nominees. Then, the ballots are sent out. Voting members are allowed to choose up to five nominees, ranked in order of preference.
Once members send back their ballots, PricewaterhouseCoopers begins the process of crunching the numbers. Specifically, they're looking for the magic number—the amount of votes in each category that automatically turns a potential nominee into an official nominee. The median age was The Academy announced it would double the number of women and minority members by to foster a more diverse environment.
Last summer, the organization announced it had met that goal. The Academy is now one-third female and 19 percent "underrepresented minorities. Now, more than 2, are not Americans. Members of each of the 17 branches pick the nominees in their area of expertise.
The actors' branch—the largest voting group—submits nominations for the acting categories, directors submit nominations for best director and so on. Nominations for certain awards, like for best international film and best animated feature, are chosen by special committees. All voting members choose the winners. In 22 of 23 categories, the person with the most votes is the winner.
But when it comes to the coveted best picture award, the Oscar voters have since used a complicated preferential ballot system in which they rank the films from most favorite to least favorite.
