Avoid assumptions and communicate with the person to insure a comfortable workspace for everyone. While the best practice is to directly ask someone how their name is pronounced, there are a variety of online resources that help with pronunciation.

One online resource is the Voice of America pronunciation guide. This resource allows you to type in a name and returns the phonetic spelling with accented syllables and capital letters. Say How? Anecdotally, individuals who have experienced incorrect pronunciation, nicknaming, or had their names repeatedly misspelled often feel belittled and remember these events throughout their lives.

Below are some stories from individuals in the Auburn community. I spelled it out phonetically on the card Auburn gave us to put our names on and they still butchered it.

Just copy it as it is. So, when someone takes the time to learn to pronounce or spell it right especially the accent! It makes it clear that they value me as an individual. So with an unusual name and all of that, I was kinda known on campus.

In my 2nd or 3rd year, six students from Siberia came to our school. When we met, … I jokingly told him that he had stolen my name and I wanted it back. And we are still friends. Something that has occurred many times is after saying my name, the person responds with [a more common name with similar phonetics].

To show blatant ignorance or dismissiveness when hearing a new name is pretty disrespectful to me and speaks to the lack of common courtesy, diversity and cultural awareness in their life. One year we had custom visors made for my siblings and I at the beach and it was the highlight of our trip. Our names ON something. I remember my brother having his hat in college!
